  • Notes 
    • Manufactured Iron and had iron works and furnaces in Botetourt County, Virginia near Fincastle and in Cloverdale on Back Creek, six miles from Buchanan.
    • He gave his son Lewis Harvey twelve hundred acres of mineral and other valuable lands, called "Speedwell," afterwards in the part of Botetourt cut off, as Roanoke county on the waters of Back Creek. [10]

      They had five children; Robert, born in Cecil County, October 30, 1756, died at Marthas Furnace, Virginia, near Fincastle; William born in Cecil County, March 11, 1761, died at Fincastle, Va. 1825; Jane, born April 17, 1763 and James born November 10, 1765.

      The three brothers were in the Revolutionary war together. Robert was only one hundred yards from William when he fell in the battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina, but owing to the nearness of the enemy he could not remove the body so William was buried on the battle field.
