While serving in Scotland he was said to have met Margaret Christie while watering his horse at a stream and that they eventually eloped; she with fifty spade guineas sewn into her corsets. On Christmas Day, 1826, they were married. [1]
It was she who was interviewed by her cousin Alcee William Stewart and his son a year before she died in 1908 aged 80; and the story is that the old lady was extremely confused by all the questions fired at her by the Americans. [2]
