      MONTAUT DE MONBERAUT FAMILY
      Compiled and written by
      Sidney L.Villeré
1668 Dufossat Street New Orleans, Louisiana.

Among the Colonial families of the French nobility who came to Louisiana
during the second decade of the 18th century, none were more active and
colorful then the Monberaut's who hailed from Gascony.

The progenitor of this remarkable family was Messire Henri Ayme
Elizabeth de Montault, Chevalier de Monberaut. At the time of his
marriage contract dated November 22,1744, he was listed as the son of
the deceased Messire Joseph Hector de Montault de Monberault, a Marquis
of the realm, and the deceased Marguerite de Blondel de Mony. His bride
was Dame Francoise Laurance Leblanc, the widow St. Aignet. Monberaut was
strangely listed as a "Huguenot Captain" in the baptismal papers of his
sons. It is evident that due to his worth and powerful connections, he
somehow managed to remain in the Catholic Province.

The Monberaut-Leblanc nuptials took place during the administration of
Governor de Vaudreuil who graced this important wedding by his presence.
The following distinguished members of the colony at New Orleans signed
      the marriage contract:
      Helene de Moriere de Fazende
      Alexandre Vielle
      Dame Arlut Tixerant
      Gabriel Tixerant
      Helene de Fazende
      Marguerite Chauvin-Delery
      Laurance Chauvin
      Chevalier de Bell Isle
      Leblanc de Laloire
      Chevalier de Noyan
      Henri, Chev.de Louboey
      Chevalier de Benac
      Francois de Fleuriau
      Chevalier de Macarty
      Joseph Brusle'
      Jacques Cantrelle
      Jousset de Laloire
      Raguet,Roval Notary
      {Louisiana Historical Quarterly, Vol.13,No.2,p.314.}
On July 18,1743, the records of the Superior Council in Louisiana
mentions an obligation of 2000 livres by de Monberaut to the Sieur
Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne de Bienville which he promises to pay by 1744 the
      year of his marriage.

(Louisiana Historical Quarterly, Vol. ll, No. 4, p. 636.)

During the administration of Governor de Kerlerec, the Chevalier de
Monberaut obtained a land grant of the famous "Livois Plantation".
Apparently, on July 9,1765 he owned it jointly with Louis Fontenot, as
they sold it on that date to Samuel Israel, Alexander Salomans, and
Joseph Depalacious, merchants and co-partners at Mobile. This plantation
      was located outside Mobile.
(Hamilton, Peter-"Colonial Mobile", p.235). (Moses, "History of the Jews
      In Mobile"

Louisiana Historical Quarterly, Vol. XL, No. 2. p.113.)
With the advent of the Spanish revolution of l768 in Louisiana, de
Monberaut and his sons found their position untenable. Rather than take
sides, he advised his family to leave Louisiana until peace was fully
restored; His sons went to Jamaica and Saint Domingue, while he entered
the service of the British in West Florida. At this point in his
military Career, he became a valuable officer in Indian Affairs. He
explains his military policy in a valuable book.
(Montault de Monberaut, Henri- "Memoires Justificatif" Indian Policy In
West Florida, 1763-1765, translated by Milo B. Howard, Jr. and Robert E.
Rea- University of Alabama Press, 1965.)

Later in the Spanish administration in Louisiana, the sons made an
attempt to come back to the Province, but they were barred due to the
slaves they tried to bring back into the Spanish domains. Only one son
was allowed at a later date to return to the place of his birth.
