Notes |
- George Reade married Elizabeth Martain, daughter of Captain Nicholas Martain, born in Belgium, and came to Virginia with her parents. Capt. Nicholas Martain represented Kent Island, York, and Chiskiack, in the House of Burgesses, in 1632. [1]
- Elizabeth Martian, eldest daughter of Nicolas de la Malier and Jane, his wife, married Col. George Reade, whose daughter, Elizabeth Reade, married Speaker Augustine Warner, of Warner Hall, Gloucester County. [5]
- Elizabeth Reade made her will in York Co., which was proved January 24, 1687, and names sons Robert, Francis, Thomas and Benjamin Read (the last two under age), daughter Elizabeth Chisman, and grand children Elizabeth, Mildred and Thomas Chisman. [3]
Died:
- Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade survived her husband by several years, dying in 1686, and her will was proved in York County Court on January 24, 1686/7. [6]
- The will of Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade was dated February 10, 1685--which probably means February 10, 1685/6. Among other bequests is one reading: "I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mildred Warner the mourning Ring I usually ware". The will names as living children Robert Reade, Francis Reade, Benjamin Reade and Thomas Reade (these last two sons being under age), Elizabeth Chisman (herself the mother of daughters Elizabeth and Mildred), Mary Reade, Mildred Warner, and a deceased son George Reade; and there is mention also of Thomas Chisman, husband of Elizabeth (Reade) Chisman beforementioned. [2]
- Within the past decade workment were grading Buckner Street near Main Street, Yorktown, near the original Martiau and Reade home. Two large stones were unearthed and were about to be destroyed when it was noticed that they bore lettered inscriptions; upon further examination they were found to be the tombstones of Col. George Reade and Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade. The names upon the tombstones were quite apparent and could be clearly made out, though some of the dates were indistinct. Experts were charged with recutting the stones, and they were restored. The tombstone of Col. George Reade reads as follows:
HERE LYETH INTERED COLLEL GEORGE READ ESQR. WHO WAS BORN YE 25TH DAY OCTOBER IN YE YEARE OF OUR LORD 1608 AND DECEASED OCTOBER 1674 HE BEING IN THE 66TH YR. OF HIS AGE.
In cutting the stone of Elizabeth (Martiau) Reade it was found that the fourth and fifth lines were entirely undecipherable. It is believed that in attempting to restore this stoen mistakes were made in the dates placed theron, and that the original stone probably read:
HERE LYETH INTERED ELIZABETH MARTIAU DECEASED WIFE OF GEORGE READ ESQR' WHO WAS BORN IN YE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1625 AND DECEASED YE YEAR 1686 SHE BEING IN YE 61ST YEARE OF HER AGE
On the restored tombstone, however, these figures last-mentioned read, respectively, 1605, 1676, and 71st. On the tombstone of Col. George Reade the date of his death is given as 1674; and his will was prove din General Court at Jamestown on November 21st following his death. [2]
