  • Notes
    • By patent of November 23, 1663 Maj. John Lewis acquired 600 acres along Poropotank Creek, which was from 1651 to 1691 the boundary between Gloucester and New Kent; for in 1667 a John Lewis had a patent for 2600 acres in New Kent and Gloucester on both sides of Poropotank Creek "next below the plantation of said John Lewis", 600 acres of which was granted to the said John Lewis by patent dated November 23, 1663. [3]
    • It is part of the tradition of General Robert Lewis, that Major John Lewis married Isabella Warner--a sister of the "Speaker", Augustine Warner, Jr.--and built Warner Hall in her honor. Unfortunately this tradition has been widely circulated and given certain credence, but it is now definitely disproved as the facts regarding the wife of Major John Lewis have come to light. The tombstone of "Councillor" John Lewis at Warner Hall states that he was the son of "John and Isabella Lewis"; and it has consequently been known for some years that the wife of Maj. John Lewis was named Isabella; but there has never been any proof that she was a Miss Warner, and it is now known that she was not. There has never been any proof that "Speaker" Warner ever had a sister named Isabella, and he undoubtably did not have such a sister. An act passed by the House of Burgesses in the eighteenth century proves that the "Speaker" had only one sister, who married Lawrence Townley. Major John Lewis is reputed to have married about the year 1666; and this date harmonizes with the known date of birth--1669--of his son "Councillor" John Lewis. There can be no doubt that Major John Lewis married Isabella Miller, daughter of James Miller of York County, Virginia. This James Miller settled in York County in 1648, having a grant of 150 acres on Rowlston Creek; he died in 1657, his will being dated on January 24th of that year and mentioning among others his son James. The younger James Miller in turn made his will on March 29, 1678 and died without issue; and his will names "my sister, Mrs. Isabella Lewis, wife of Maj. John Lewis", and devises "to her my whole estate, with reversion to my newphews Edward Lewis, and John Lewis the younger" (Tyler's Historical Quarterly Magazine, vol. 1, p. 285). [2]

    • second son of General Robert Lewis of Brecon, Wales, born about 1640. [1]
