  • 10 Feb 1763: Britain, Spain and France signed the Treaty of Paris ending the French-Indian War. France ceded Canada to England and gave up all her territories in the New World except New Orleans and a few scattered islands including St. Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Newfoundland.

  • 5 Mar 1766: Spanish official Don Antonio de Ulloa arrived in New Orleans to take possession of the Louisiana Territory from the French.

  • 18 Aug 1779: The first severe hurricane of the Spanish era damages most of the buildings in New Orleans and sinks ships in the river. Lake Pontchartrain and Bayou St. John pour over into the city and add to the damage.
